APY is an annualized yield that reflects the relationship between principal and interest under deposit-account disclosure rules. Using APY avoids adding a separate compounding-frequency assumption that may conflict with the institution’s disclosed yield.

A 12-month term is modeled as one year, while shorter or longer month-based terms are expressed as fractions of a year. Actual institution calculations can differ slightly because exact calendar days, interest-crediting rules and rounding may affect the final dollars.

Why APY Is the Right Input

Regulation DD defines annual percentage yield as an annualized measure of deposit earnings. The disclosure framework assumes principal and interest generally remain on deposit for the term when calculating APY, subject to special rules for certain products.

Use APY rather than the stated interest rate when both are listed. APY already reflects compounding under the disclosure assumptions, which makes it the cleaner input for comparing straightforward CDs.

What Can Change the Actual Maturity Amount

Estimated earnings work best for a fixed-rate CD where principal and interest remain on deposit until maturity. Product-specific terms can create differences from the modeled result.

  • exact opening and maturity dates;
  • interest-crediting and rounding methods;
  • required interest payouts;
  • stepped or variable-rate structures;
  • fees or promotional bonuses; and
  • transactions that change the balance before maturity.

Compare CDs on More Than APY

APY places yields on a common annual basis, but the dollar result still depends on the deposit and term. Run competing offers with the same deposit amount to see the estimated earnings difference.

Other terms can matter just as much as a small rate difference. Compare minimum opening deposit, maturity date, early withdrawal penalty, automatic-renewal rules, grace period and deposit-insurance status before choosing an account.

Deposit Insurance and Maturity Planning

Eligible CDs at an FDIC-insured bank are deposit products covered by FDIC insurance. Coverage generally applies up to the standard insurance limit per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category, with deposits in the same category at the same bank aggregated for coverage purposes.

Federally insured credit unions use the NCUA Share Insurance Fund under the applicable ownership rules. The calculator does not estimate insurance coverage because it does not know your other deposits, institutions or ownership structure.
